I am happy that you salvaged this from the trash can! It is beautiful. Sometimes it is nice to see a normally full color image in black and white...it brings out the values and gives a different perspective. like/f

Barbara Jewell replied:

Great to know you see what I saw! It's actually a good way of checking our full-color watercolors for value contrast! A friend of mine who teaches asked for a copy to use with her students. Thanks so much for stopping by, Anne!

Artist's Description

This is a black and white version of the watercolor titled, "Napa Valley Rose." When the color version was first scanned, it was printed in black and white by mistake. As I saw it being deposited in the trash can as an error, it caught my eye and I rescued it! It reminded me of something antique, dream-like, almost haunting, like a memory of a lost love. (Thus, the title.) In technical terms, I saw it as a good example of an appealing value study, showing the whole gamut from white to dark.

About Barbara Jewell

Barbara Jewell

I have been seriously involved in watercolor painting for the last 20 years following retirement from my public school teaching career. Having the time to paint, along with the freedom from the need to make a living at the same time, has opened many wonderful new opportunities, friendships and experiences for me. I am a frequent exhibitor in art shows at the local, regional, state and national levels, having been honored to receive numerous awards for my work. My painting style is realistic. I am drawn to detail and favor the use of vivid color. I enjoy painting a variety of subject matter, but the glorious world of nature is what seems to suit me best. Many of my paintings reflect time spent outdoors, especially in the mountains...
