Artist's Description

The focus of this painting is on the elephant's eye and the soulful expression it conveys. (Note the multiple layers of lashes needed to protect the animal's eye from the copious amounts of mud and dirt they are so fond of tossing up onto their heads. In older adults, some lashes may be as long as 6 or 7 inches!) With elephants' increasing vulnerability to slaughter by poachers, together with their expressions of very human emotions, the title seemed to suggest to me this mature elephant's lament at what he may have witnessed in his lifetime

About Barbara Jewell

Barbara Jewell

I have been seriously involved in watercolor painting for the last 20 years following retirement from my public school teaching career. Having the time to paint, along with the freedom from the need to make a living at the same time, has opened many wonderful new opportunities, friendships and experiences for me. I am a frequent exhibitor in art shows at the local, regional, state and national levels, having been honored to receive numerous awards for my work. My painting style is realistic. I am drawn to detail and favor the use of vivid color. I enjoy painting a variety of subject matter, but the glorious world of nature is what seems to suit me best. Many of my paintings reflect time spent outdoors, especially in the mountains...
