Description
There is a story to this painting: My husband and I have spent many winters skiing at Crested Butte Mt. Resort In CO. Beside the main lift to the top of the mountain stands this aspen tree which caught my attention many times as we rode past it on our way up. The trunk is badly scarred from what looks like lightning strikes, which also appear to have damaged the upper trunk so badly that the entire top fell off at some point. The two branches growing out and up from that point have long reminded me of the tree's "arms" being lifted up to the heavens in "supplication," pleading for help in its brokenness. I saw this tree as a symbol of us humans, also reaching up to the light of the Almighty in our state of "brokenness," pleading for help and healing. Trees are perhaps my favorite subject, and this one seemed to be begging to be painted. The Bible verse referred to in the title, for those who are interested is:
"Hear the voice of my supplication, as I cry to thee for help,
as I lift up my hands toward thy most holy sanctuary."
I would appreciate any comments you would care to leave.

Barbara, often times when I read a bible verse that is a prayer of plea, it brings tears to my eyes, this is one of those times, how beautiful your painting , how wonderfully you have described with your art, the beautiful Psalm..."I lift up my arms toward thy most holy sanctuary" ...a burden I bore has been lifted... v/f
Barbara Jewell replied:
Sharon, I appreciate your response to this painting more than you know. I can't thank you enough for writing. Being very "visually oriented," as we artists seem to be, sometimes an image can enhance significant passages in a way that brings the meaning and emotion into sharper focus. It is wonderful to know that this painting has conveyed this feeling to someone else. Thank you!
