Artist's Description

This is a black and white version of my watercolor, "Unfolding Light." In classes I have taken, there has been an emphasis on the importance of contrasting values (light and dark) adding visual interest to a painting. Value can sometimes be difficult to determine in full color. Therefore, printing it in black and white helps to make those contrasts stand out. I personally love this particular piece in B/W as it seem to have a bit of a more sophisticated look, as well as a somewhat different "feel" than the in-color version. The photo reference was taken in California wine country where we found vineyards surrounded by a stunning variety of rose bushes.

About Barbara Jewell

Barbara Jewell

I have been seriously involved in watercolor painting for the last 20 years following retirement from my public school teaching career. Having the time to paint, along with the freedom from the need to make a living at the same time, has opened many wonderful new opportunities, friendships and experiences for me. I am a frequent exhibitor in art shows at the local, regional, state and national levels, having been honored to receive numerous awards for my work. My painting style is realistic. I am drawn to detail and favor the use of vivid color. I enjoy painting a variety of subject matter, but the glorious world of nature is what seems to suit me best. Many of my paintings reflect time spent outdoors, especially in the mountains...
