Description
This painting depicts frequent sights along the trails of Cook Forest State Park, in Cooksburg. PA. Years ago, huge boulders were carried south by glaciers and deposited in this area. Seeds from surrounding trees landed on top of these boulders. Once enough soil and moisture collected on the rocks, tree seeds began to sprout. Over the years, some of the strongest survived by sending their roots down over the boulders into the earth below. I have seen some trees that have outlasted the (smaller) rocks over which they grew. With the rock no longer beneath the roots, some of these trees begin to resemble giraffes with long legs and very long necks! This scene especially captured my attention because of the additional phenomenon of the smaller tree's root having wrapped itself around and under the root of the larger one, finally making its way into the soil. The textures of the bark and mosses; patterns of the roots, and the striking turquoise color of the lichens on the larger tree, challenged me to attempt the "capture" with watercolor...and it was a challenge! This forest is one of my all-time favorite places to enjoy the peace, serenity, majesty, and the amazing workings of nature. Living things can inspire us as they overcome obstacles to not only survive, but thrive! Life, truly does "Find a Way."
