This painting depicts frequent sights along the trails of Cook Forest State Park, in Cooksburg. PA. Years ago, huge boulders were carried south by glaciers and deposited in this area. Seeds from surrounding trees landed on top of these boulders. Once enough soil and moisture collected on the rocks, tree seeds began to sprout. Over the years, some of the strongest survived by sending their roots down over the boulders into the earth below. I have seen some trees that have outlasted the (smaller) rocks over which they grew. With the rock no longer beneath the roots, some of these trees begin to resemble giraffes with long legs and very long necks! This scene especially captured my attention because of the additional phenomenon of the smaller tree's root having wrapped itself around and under the root of the larger one, finally making its way into the soil. I have been seriously involved in watercolor painting for the last 20 years following retirement from my public school teaching career. Having the time to paint, along with the freedom from the need to make a living at the same time, has opened many wonderful new opportunities, friendships and experiences for me. I am a frequent exhibitor in art shows at the local, regional, state and national levels, having been honored to receive numerous awards for my work. My painting style is realistic. I am drawn to detail and favor the use of vivid color. I enjoy painting a variety of subject matter, but the glorious world of nature is what seems to suit me best.
